Bottling Day

Bottling usually happens a few weeks (or in some cases a few months) after brew day. This is my set of steps to bottle from a 5 gallon batch and it takes about an hour and a half with this set of equipment. Happy Bottling!

Bottling Steps

  1. Clean all equipment with no-fragrance detergent or PBW.  Get sanitization bucket and materials ready.  Clean the following:
    • Stirring paddle, 48-50 x 12 oz bottles, 48-50 bottle caps, tubing, bottling bucket, spray bottle, auto-siphon, stove top, 4 qt pitcher, bottle rinser
  2. Making Priming Solution
    • Boil 16 oz water, add 2/3 cup of corn sugar
    • Let cool down off burner with lid on
  3. Make Sanitizing Solution
    • Add 5 gallons of warm water to food-grade bucket
    • Stir in 1.0 oz of Star San
    • Alternatively, make 2 x 2.5 gallon batches of sanitizer to make it easier to pour into the tub
  4. Setup bottle rinser
    • Add 4.5 gallons of sanitizing solution to 7 gallon tub
    • Assemble bottle rinser (e.g. if using FastRack)
    • Alternatively, the bottles can be filled with sanitizing solution by hand (but this takes a lot longer)
  5. Rinse and sanitize 50 bottle caps
  6. Transfer beer to bottling bucket
    • Measure Final Gravity (FG) using a hydrometer or read the data from a Tilt
    • Sanitize bottling bucket with spray bottle, close valve
    • Add priming solution to bottling bucket
    • Connect vinyl tubing to catalyst or autosiphon and transfer beer to bottling bucket. Make sure tube touches bottom of bottling bucket to prevent oxidation
    • Once the beer is fully transfered, stir gently with a sanitized paddle to further mix priming solution, then place a lid loosely on the bucket and put on a table
  7. Start bottle washer and sanitize 2 x 24 bottles on FastRack trays
  8. Setup bottling “Factory” and begin bottling
    • Stage on a table near a chair
      • Bottling Bucket, sanitized bottles, empty box for putting filled bottles, bottle capper, sanitized caps, pot to catch drips from bottling bucket
    • Affix 7-8″ sanitized vinyl tube to spigot on bottling bucket
    • Fill up a bottle until it is about a thumb length from the top
    • Slowly close the valve and pull the bottle down away from the tube
    • Load a sanitized cap into the capper, adjust the height and cap!
    • Place filled bottle into the box and repeat until all the beer is gone
  9. Place boxes of bottles into a dark room at room temp for 1-2 weeks
  10. Pour into a glass and enjoy!
